By Mark Singer | Dallas, Texas -- Fans arriving Sunday night to watch the NBA's Finals game between the Dallas Mavericks versus the Miami Heat, encountered members of the Westboro Baptist Chruch protesting the a NBA policy against anti-gay epithets.
Some fans arriving seemed to be confused by the presence of the church members who have gained national notoriety for protesting at the funerals of U. S. servicemembers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Dallas local Tribune Media Outlet KDAF-TV33 reported that church member and protester Steve Drain told reporters:
"Now David Stern, the tyrant commissioner of the NBA is jamming a message down the throat of America that not only is it okay to be gay but you don't even want to use the word gay in a negative connotation. Gay or straight god will love you gay or straight, gay or straight,” he said. “John 3:16; whosoever believes in him. Not Republican, not Democrats, not straight people, whosoever believes in him,” he said.
The league's new policy against gay slurs that already has resulted in fines for players including Kobe Bryant and Joakim Noah. In other developments because of the NBA's stance on the antigay slurs, which has quickly changed the discussions around gay issues in the NBA, Phoenix Suns president Rick Welts came out in May, followed by a video in support of marriage equality for the Human Rights Campaign by Suns point guard Steve Nash.
