Brody's Notes... Gender Identity Protections Bill Overcomes First Major Hurdle In Maryland House

Maryland State House
By Linsey Pecikonis (Baltimore, Maryland) MAR 25 | The House of Delegates heard the second reading of the Gender Identity Anti-Discrimination Act (House Bill 235) today, and voted to send it to third reading. The third and final vote is tentatively scheduled for Saturday. If approved by the House on third reading, the bill will move to the Senate for debate. The Gender Identity Anti-Discrimination Act, adds anti-discrimination protections on the basis of gender identity for employment, housing, and credit.
Equality Maryland's Executive Director, Morgan Meneses-Sheets, said:
"In debate on second reader on HB 235, the House of Delegates showed that discrimination against transgender Marylanders is unjust and will not be tolerated in the Free State. Floor debate was relatively subdued, due in large part, to the calm and cogent leadership of Del. Dan Morhaim (Democrat, District 11), and we thank him for his commitment to ending discrimination. We are hopeful that this important piece of legislation - that provides vital protections on the basis of gender identity in housing, employment and credit - will move successfully through the House and onto the Senate."
