By Mark Singer (Washington DC) OCT 23 | The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council issued a decision in June, which was just now made public this week, against Toronto radio station CFNY-FM 102.1 and DJ/shock jock Dean Blundell, for a series of messages he sent a year ago this month regarding his fellow Canadian,16 year old pop star Justin Bieber.According to the CBSC findings, Blundell had tweeted a message that implied that the pop star was Gay. Bieber's fans who make up nearly three percent of all traffic on Twitter and its website responded in a negative fashion which led to Blundell's sending out the following tweet:
"Save your energy for puberty or to fend off your dad tonight while you’re sleepin’.”
The CBSC's finding reported that the Twitter exchanges then became the topic of conversation on Blundell's daily CFNY-FM show. He repeated his tweets, and accompanying responses, referring to one 12-year-old male critic as a future "chugger," slang for a male prostitute. In the controversy and outrage that followed, listeners lodged numerous complaints with the CBSC.
After a CBSC investigation of the issue, the regulatory agency found Blundell's comments to be "gratuitous and unnecessary," and a violation of Canada's Equitable Portrayal Code. The assessed penalty was to announce the decision twice on air during peak listening hours.
