Brody's Scribbles... Trab, On Word Usage

By Trab (Vancouver, BC) June 16 | Words have great power, and specific usage can slant a discussion without seeming obvious. One such term is “lifestyle”, when used to refer to homosexuality. There is an almost immediate understanding that “lifestyle” is voluntary and under ones direct control. If it were used in that context and it was really under our control, there would be not problem with using that, but sadly it is being used by the anti-homosexual lobby to refer, not to actions which would be under our control, but to our very core being, our very orientation itself. In that context, it is a total misuse of a perfectly good term, and sets all LGBTQ people up for unjustified criticism. It implies that we could change, but willfully don’t do so. It is time to protest the slanted language whenever it is used.
Palo Alto, California based Writer & Comedian Ethan August, gives his spin on the DADT compromise & current political atmosphere surrounding the ongoing debate in Washington.
“Maybe some straight people need to acknowledge that over the last century, they have begun to adopt our lifestyle and that the idea of a fire and brimstone Old Testament marriage is a farce at best.”

My Take: Ending 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Would Undermine Religious Liberty
By Tony Perkins (Washington DC) June 1
“…will the chaplain be free to recommend therapy to overcome homosexual attractions? Or will he be forced to affirm a lifestyle that his faith condemns?”

U.S. Supreme Court Splits On Campus Christian Argument
“The Christian group requires that voting members sign a statement of faith. The group also regards "unrepentant participation in or advocacy of a sexually immoral lifestyle" as being inconsistent with the statement of faith.”

Huckabee Claims College Journalist 'Grossly Distorts His Views'
“Huckabee went on to draw parallels between homosexuality and other lifestyles that are considered by some to be morally aberrant;
“You don’t go ahead and accommodate every behavioral pattern that is against the ideal,” he said of same-sex marriage. “That would be like saying, well, there are a lot of people who like to use drugs, so let’s go ahead and accommodate those who want to use drugs.”

When I was in my younger years, (no we won't go there, thank you,) Anyway my doctor advised that I change my lifestyle. When I asked what that meant, he would just say, "You know change the way you live."
So I changed my doctor to one who felt the same way I did about 'lifestyles' and I had no more problems with lifestyles until the moralists paraded their belief condemning what they call 'immoral lifestyles.'
This time, they are the ones who must change their lifestyles to accept us. They might want to start with their immoral belief systems. I suggest intellectual honesty as a good place to start.
Of course they may have to take a little time to dig around and dust off the their intellects.
