By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) June 16 | In a Tuesday press release, the DC LGBT Centre stated that:
"The DC Center is proud to announce we will be relocating to 1318 U St NW. This location is metro accessible, highly visible, and located in a vibrant and growing part of our city. We will be moving on Saturday June 19th, and open for business at our new location on June 21st. We expect to be in this location for two years, and will continue to work toward our long-term goal of a permanent home for our local LGBT community. As always, we count on your support to help us continue our work."
Washington Blade Senior Correspondent Lou Chibbaro Jr wrote in an article yesterday that the DC LGBT Center is moving to a location in Washington's historic U Street corridor;
"David Mariner, the Center’s executive director, said the Center will move into the storefront space at 1318 U Street, N.W., on Saturday and expects to open for business Monday.“It’s a great, highly visible spot,” Mariner said. “It’s not quite as big as we would have liked, but we’re going to make it work.”
The new location is less than one block from the U Street Metro rail station and in the heart of the city’s historic black entertainment district, which has evolved over the past two decades into an upscale restaurant and nightclub destination. Newly built apartments and condominiums are located nearby, and the area has a growing LGBT population.
The Centre also said in the release that volunteers were needed for the Saturday, June 19th, move:
Join us for moving day Saturday June 19th. Sign up for a two-hour shift between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM and receive a free DC Center t-shirt when you help us move. Bring your friends or meet new ones here. This is a great opportunity to show your support for the DC Center. Join us! [Link]
