By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) Mar 3 | The United States Supreme Court declined to intervene in Washington D.C.'s Gay Marriage issue clearing the path for the city to begin issuing marriage licences to applicants today. In a written opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts stated: "It has been the practice of the court to defer to the decisions of the courts of the District of Columbia on matters of exclusively local concern." He also went on to note that the fact that although D.C. is autonomous, Congress could have passed a bill to disallow the city government from enacting the law, and it did not do so.
The Clerk's office for the District commenced issuing the licences which by law cannot be enacted upon until after a three day waiting period.
