By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) Sept 24 | Lebanese born, British musical songwriter-singer and Grammy Nominated BRIT award winner Mika, has been intentionally ambiguous about his sexuality which has led to at least one death threat and countless disparging comments and rumours. In an article recently published by Dutch LGBT magazine, Gay & Night, he commented;
"I've never ever labeled myself. But having said that; I've never limited my life, I've never limited who I sleep with. So, whatever. (...) Call me whatever you want. Call me bisexual, if you need a term for me.
...
"There are ways of being a role model without having to always having to establish yourself with a label. Let's say if you're a 16-year-old guy, and you're not sure about your sexuality, you should be as free as you want.
"Having a role model who makes you feel like it's alright to do whatever you want, without the pressure of a label, I think that's a good thing as well. I think there's a million different ways to do it, there isn't only one. And I hope I'm right."
In an interview with the magazine OUT, in 2008, he was quoted as saying;
"it was possible to discuss sexuality without labels..."
This in response to questions about himself, in which he has not previously identified a term to use when describing his sexual preference. Some members of the press have commented that the singer was either 'ambisexual' or a 'gaybe'.
Earlier this year he had said this, in an interview with thisislondon.co.uk,
"It was over whether I am gay or not. He wasn't happy that I won't talk about my personal life like that,"
when asked about the one death threat he had received.
Mika was educated at the prestigious Westminster School and the Royal College of Music, and is based from London. His first studio album received positive critical reaction and the Gay & Night magazine interview comes as Mika promotes his next album, The Boy Who Knew Too Much.
