By Brody Levesque | BRIGHTON, UK -- An 18 year old straight British teenager found himself getting brutally beaten about his face with a bottle after defending against homophobic remarks being made by a group of individuals during last weekend’s Brighton LGBTQ Pride celebrations.
Jack Young told his mother Sue Fallon, he had become separated from his friends late on Saturday night and ran across across a group of persons who were making derogatory remarks about the LGBTQ community across the street from a post-Pride party.
Young interceded and was then attacked and beaten with a bottle which left large gashes and cuts on the teen's face. [Depicted]
Fallon, angered by the attack on her son took to Facebook, posting a photo of her son showing the results of the beating. She then went to Facebook group Wipe Out Homophobia to spread word of her son's courage.
After she posted his photo and story on the Facebook site, more than 4,000 people left “Likes” and more than 700 left comments within 24 hours.
Fallon said during media inquiries that, “The shock for me is how loving and genuine the LGBT community have been. Someone has even offered him tickets to Thorpe Park.” [A theme park in Chertsey-Surrey, UK]
Fallon left another post on the Wipeout Homopbia in which she expressed her gratitude for the kindness of the persons responding to the story.
“I am extremely proud of my son for what he did. I know for a fact that if he came across the same situation again he would react the same, it’s just how he is.I have just spent over an hour reading all of your lovely comments. I am overwhelmed by all [the] caring words.
I LOVE how many of you like the photo. I know it’s because you like what he did, not what has happened. I would like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all of your comments.
A lot of you have asked if the police are involved, they have been round to speak to Jack but he does not want it to go any further, This he says, is because there is no point, they would not get caught, They know they have done wrong and one day they will all get theirs.
I wish he would make a statement but sadly at 18 he is classed as an adult so I have no control."
Young declined to press charges and a police spokesperson acknowledged to LGBTQNation Thursday that without Young's participation in a criminal investigation, it would be difficult to arrest suspects. The spokesperson also confirmed that based on a preliminary inquiries, police officials saw no reason to disbelieve Young's version of events.
Fallon's mother said of her son Jack, “[He] Does not see himself as a hero, he was in his own words “‘Just doing his civic duty.'"
