Brody's Notes... Vice-President Biden To LGBT Equality Advocates: "You are freeing the soul of the American people"

By Brody Levesque | PROVINCETOWN, MA -- During his campaign speech Sunday morning, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden thanked LGBT equality rights advocates speaking before an audience at the Pilgrim Monument and Museum in this popular LGBT destination township located at the tip of Cape Cod

Biden credited the crowd of around 300 people, many wearing LGBTQ Pride related materials, with advancing the “civil rights of every straight American. You are freeing the soul of the American people," a line that earned him a loud and sustained applause.

The vice-president emphasised LGBT issues during his campaign speech adding; “If I had to use one adjective to describe this community it’d be courage," Biden said. "You have summoned the courage to speak out, to come out. We owe you.”

Biden had revealed his support for same-sex marriage during an interview with the moderator of the NBC News programme Meet the Press back in May. Biden's disclosure propelled President Obama into clarifying his position- in favour of legalising same-sex marriage- in an interview a few days later with ABC News Good Morning America's anchor Robin Roberts.

Same-sex marriage quality has now for the first time been included as a major part of the Democratic platform for the party's convention next month in Charlotte, N.C.

BIden has been a long time supporter of the LGBT community including publicly voicing his opposition to the federal Defence of Marriage Act as well as a vocal leader in the efforts that led to the repeal of the "Don't Ask-Don't Tell" policy which barred Gay & Lesbian service-members from opening serving in the armed forces last fall.
