PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA -- The three largest internet social media networks- Facebook, Twitter, Google+- will mark ‘Spirit Day’ tomorrow by turning several pages purple and encouraging their employees to learn about the event.
In early October of last year after numerous young LGBTQ people killed themselves as a result of bullying, Canadian teenager Brittany McMillan created Spirit Day to show support for LGBT young people who are victims of bullying.
Spirit Day encourages people to wear purple on October 20th to remember LGBT teenagers who killed themselves after being bullied. McMillan was inspired to use the colour purple from last stripe of the Rainbow Flag, which was defined by Gilbert Baker, creator of that flag, as 'representing "spirit."'
Users of Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and other networks can use an app to turn their profile pictures purple, while Facebook will also be turning two of its pages — Facebook Diversity and Facebook Safety — purple for the day.
