Brody's Notes... Homo Hero Awards 2011 – Nominees Announced

By Joanne Dunning | MANCHESTER, UK -- The nomination period is now over in The Lesbian & Gay Foundation’s Homo Hero Awards 2011, the top three nominees in each category have been shortlisted and the public vote is open.
Hundreds of people have taken the time to nominate their heroes – those people, groups and organisations who challenge homophobia, and who have achieved significant gains for lesbian, gay and bisexual communities.
Here are the top three nominees from each category...
Homo Hero - Community Champion of the year
  • • Daniel Burford – OutdoorLads
  • • Jen Yockney – Biphoria
  • • Jackie Crozier – Manchester Pride

Homo Hero - Business of the year
  • • Serenity Security Solutions
  • • The Co-operative – Respect Network
  • • Barclays Bank Spectrum Network

Homo Hero - lesbian, gay or bisexual role model of the year
  • • Marcus Morgan – Bisexual activist
  • • Sam Whalley - NUS Student of the Year in Higher Education
  • • Sir Ian McKellen – Actor & campaigner

Homo Hero - Public Sector Partner of the year
  • • NHS Manchester
  • • Greater Manchester Police
  • • NHS North West

Homo Hero – Volunteer of the year
  • • Daniel Burford – Outdoorlads
  • • Jim Vann - George House Trust & Lesbian & Gay Foundation Volunteer
  • • Natalya Dell – lead organiser of BiCon

Homo Hero - Community group or organisation of the year
  • • Bi Community News
  • • Albert Kennedy Trust
  • • OutdoorLads

Homo Hero - LGB&T venue of the Year Award

The Lesbian & Gay Foundation’s Chief Executive, Paul Martin OBE said, “It’s great that the awards have had such a phenomenal response and there has been such a diverse range of nominees. The awards are really important because they are nominated and voted for by the people. They are about celebrating people in our everyday lives who have made a significant contribution to supporting either you or people you care about."
The winners of each category will be announced at a special Homo Heroes Award Ceremony on Thursday September 22nd at the Mint Hotel in Manchester.
