Brody's Notes... Wyoming State Senate Passes Bill Invalidating Same-Sex Marriages Performed In Other States

By Mark Singer (Washington DC) FEB 18 | The Wyoming State Senate in a close 16-14 vote passed House Bill 74 which bans recognition of same-sex marriages in the state. Backers of the measure said the legislation is needed to resolve a conflict in Wyoming law, which defines marriage as a contract "between a male and a female person" but also recognizes any valid marriage performed outside the state.
Opponents have said that not only is the bill is unneeded, but its also unconstitutional, and discriminatory directed solely against gay and lesbian couples.
The bill was amended in a last minute compromise amendment which guaranteed out-of-state couples in civil unions access to Wyoming courts.
When the final vote was announced, several dozen supporters gathered outside the Senate's chamber to have an impromptu prayer session to thank god for the legislative victory. The bill nows returns to the state House for approval of the amendment at which time it will then go to the Governor Matt Mead, (R) for his signature.

The implications for the tourist industry are huge. With Yellowstone and Grand Teton Parks a major destination, one can only imagine how many same sex couples will stay away in droves, and encourage their families and friends to do the same. As far as I'm concerned, I will never go there again.
I hope someone will at least force them to post signs at their boundaries that warn unwitting couples to not enter. Just imagine if you had an accident there and you were stripped of your rights to medical decisions for your spouse, and any number of other rights, just because of those cretins in power in Wyoming.

It is bad enough having built in discrimination for your own citizenry, but to inflict that same bigotry on anyone else who has legal rights elsewhere in the same country is just sooooo much worse.

Just looked more closely at the Wyoming Great Seal. I see the "equal rights" seems to refer to a balance between agriculture (livestock & grain) and resource extraction (mines & oil).
