Joseph Shaw
By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) DEC 10 | Newly elected Huntington Beach, California, City Councilman Joe Shaw gave a speech earlier in the week thanking his supporters and the voters for his election as an openly Gay City Councilman as he took his seat on the council for the first time.
Shaw formerly served the city as a Planning Commissioner and a Public Works Commissioner. He was instrumental in the success of Surf City Nights, Huntington Beach's popular Tuesday night downtown event. Shaw is the former owner of two successful downtown Huntington Beach retail stores. He recently began a public relations consulting business, Progressive Group.
Councilman Shaw was a founding member of the Downtown Huntington Beach Business Improvement District, serving on the board in its first year and is a former member of the Huntington Beach Visitors and Convention Bureau's Public Relations Committee. He also currently serves on the board of the Bolsa Chica Land Trust, and is proud to be a docent at Shipley Nature Center and a member of Save Our Strays of Huntington Beach.
Shaw was born at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska, and is the son of retired U. S. Air Force veteran. His mother was a Baptist Sunday School Teacher and school teacher’s aide.
Councilman Shaw graduated from California State University's Los Angeles campus with a bachelor's degree in Journalism, and has created numerous award-winning communications programs for several Los Angeles area non-profit social services agencies, including the AIDS Service Center in Pasadena and the Braille Institute. Shaw has received numerous Golden Advocate Awards from the Heathcare Public Relations and Marketing Association.
The councilman is a frequent commenter, writing as "Another Joe," on the widely popular New York City based LGBTQ political site Joe.My.God founded & edited by freelance journalist Joe Jervis.
