Brody's Notes... Stonewall Trains 25 Young People To Become Equality Campaigners

By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) SEPT 1 | Stonewall UK, the LGBT Equality Charity announced via a press release yesterday, that Twenty five young people aged 16 – 21 attended Stonewall’s latest youth residential over Bank Holiday weekend.

The campaign training weekend – the third of its kind – took place from Friday 27 – Sunday 29 August at Woodrow High House in Amersham. Ten Stonewall staff and volunteers supported the young people in planning their own campaigns against homophobia, which they will now take back to their local communities. Young people came from across the country – including Manchester, Liverpool, Somerset and Bristol – to attend the event.

Campaigns included an idea by 19 year-old Jennifer Sernat from London, who is inviting students to sign a pledge committing to stop using the phrase ‘That’s so gay’ as a derogatory term.

Stonewall Youth Coordinator Laurie Oliva said: 

"This was our best youth campaigning weekend yet. It never fails to amaze me how creative and impressive young people are with their innovative ideas to tackle homophobia back in their local communities. Stonewall is proud to harness their energy into positive action plans which will help us campaign for lesbian, gay and bisexual equality – at home, at school and at work in every local community in Britain."
