By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) Apr 11 | More than 700 people rallied today in Los Angeles at the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Centre’s McDonald/Wright building, then marched to the Social Security Administration office to demand an end to the discrimination that deprives LGBT taxpayers of more than $120 million in Social Security benefits every year.
U. S. Representative Linda Sanchez (D-CA) announced that she will author legislation to provide equal Social Security benefits for same-sex couples.
“I don’t think it’s right that Americans should be treated differently by the country they love because of who they love,” Sanchez said.
Other political and community leaders at the event included California's U. S.Senator Barbara Boxer, Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA), Rep. Laura Richardson (D-CA), L.A. City Councilmen Paul Koretz, City of West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land, LAGL Centre CEO Lotti L. Jean, National Gay & Lesbian Task Force Executive Director Rea Carey and AIDS Community Action Foundation President Craig R. Miller.
