Brody's Notes... Psychiatric Disorders in Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Populations Greater In Anti-Gay States

By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) Mar 5 | In a recently published study in the American Journal of Public Health, researchers examined the relation between living in states that had instituted bans on same-sex marriage and the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in the Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual populations.
Their findings based on accepted professional definitions as found in the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition, showed that among the respondents of the study there were increased instances of mood disorder (36%0, anxiety disorder (248%.2%), significant increases in use of alcohol abuse (41.9%), and psychiatric comorbidity (36.3%).
The study also found that there was no significant increase among LGB respondents living in states without constitutional amendments.
The conclusions were that living in states that had discriminatory policies had dire consequences that affected the mental health of the LGB persons who resided there. The findings also found credence that there was basis for scientific support to overturn those policies. The full study can be found here: [ Link ]
