By Brody Levesque (Washington DC) Mar 24 | The Equal Roots Coalition, an LGBT organisation, which is working to improve the lives of LGBTQ people based in Los Angeles County, California through its community action centre & web-based initiatives and educational programmes, has enlisted the assistance of veteran actor George Takei and his husband Brad Altman in urging LGBT persons in relationships who consider themselves married or those that are legally so, to fill out the Census which is currently underway across the United States & its territories.
In their media campaign, Equal Roots states:
"Same-sex Marriages - This is the first time in history that the US Census will be counting same-sex marriages. It doesn’t matter if you have a legal marriage license or not. The Census asks you to mark how you personally identify. If you and your partner consider yourselves married mark “husband or wife” when defining your relation to one another.Queer The Census Sticker - queerthecensus.org is providing free stickers that allow you to self-identify as LGBT on your Census form. Get one here.Self-Identify - If you feel the need to self-identify as LGBTQI within the Census form the “other ethnicity box” provides the only space available for write-ins. If you are already using that write-in space to define your ethnicity don’t be afraid to add on your sexual or gender identity right after. For example: “Aboriginal, Lesbian”Transgender & Intersex Identification - Unfortunately there currently is no way to clearly identify as transgender or intersex on the US Census. However, the Census does encourage you to self-identify within the context of the form. When marking your sex feel free to mark both M and F if you identify as something in between or mark nothing if you identify as neither. Another option is to draw in a box next to M and F that says MTF or FTM."
