By Brody Levesque (Washington DC)  Jan 29 | The Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee said Thursday that the president’s proposal in the State of the Union speech might disrupt the military at a difficult time.
Rep. Ike Skelton, a Missouri Democrat, told reporters in Kansas City yesterday that;
“We’re in the middle of two wars, and I don’t want anything that is disturbing or upsetting to the troops.”
A small group of politicians and supporters of the greater Kansas City area gay and lesbian community protested Skelton’s remarks. According to an article by Dave Helling, a staff writer for The Kansas City Star newspaper, Beth Schissel, who said she was discharged from the armed services when her sexual orientation became public, was quoted as saying;
“We ask people to lie about their orientation, serve silently and compromise their honor and integrity on a daily basis and it’s time for this to stop.”
Skelton also told reporters that the House subcommittee on military personnel would hold a hearing on the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.  He did not clarify when that hearing would be held. The Senate is expected to hold its hearings in February.
