By Brody Levesque (Bethesda, Maryland) Sept 5 | This has been a very long and hot summer both environmentally and by all accounts metaphorically, at least in the hue and cry over the Health Care Reform legislation under review and consideration by both houses of the U. S. Congress.
Adding to the pressure has been flaring tempers and ugly discord at public meetings and town hall gatherings, hosted by members of Congress in their home districts discussing this legislation. These displays of dissatisfaction have ranged from shouting matches to name calling and in a few well publicized cases, physical assaults.
The Obama Administration itself has tried to be a 'voice of reason' with the President getting out and holding meetings on the Reform Package debate with the public. President Obama also encountered the same discord, albeit much quieter, one could imagine partly due to the influential presence of the heavily armed U. S. Secret Service agents that accompanied him.
Not all gatherings or discussions however are ugly and hate-filled. During his visit to the Minnesota State Fair this past Wednesday, Sept, 2nd, Senator Al Franken (D) had a level headed, polite, and well reasoned discussion with his constituents. His approach is something that his colleagues in both houses may wish to emulate as this is an excellent example of effective legislator-constituent relations.
